Vincent Marewa Munene, 27, was arraigned in court on Monday charged with breaking into the EquityBank, Thika branch with intent to commit a felony.

The accused was charged that on April 7 and 8 with others not before court, using a hacksaw to cut through the metal grill, he broke into the bank building with intent to steal.

However, appearing before Chief Magistrate Theresa Murigi, Munene pleaded not guilty to the charges but the Thika court ordered he remains in police custody.

The judge allowed police to remand the suspect for two extra days after the State counsel Minoo Maundu pleaded with the court to allow the prosecution more time to investigate the matter.

Munene, who is a former security guard in the area, is said to have gained entry to the banking hall through the roof.

Thika OCPD Willy Simba told reporters that the suspect was detected by bank’s CCTV cameras having already gained entry into the bank.

The CCTV operators from Nairobi notified the police who immediately combed the area and arrested him in possession of crude weapons which police suspect were to be used to break into the bank's strong room.

The case will be heard on April 11, 2018.

The incident comes barely four months after the famous Sh50 million heist at Kenya Commercial Bank in Thika.
