Police in Nyamarambe area of South Mugirango constituency on Tuesday rescued a man who allegedly stole a bunch of bananas from a farm.

According to witnesses, the accused, Abel Mwancha was caught red handled in a neighbour’s farm on Monday night cutting the banana.

It is after that that the owner, Wilkister Onsongo, tipped residents, who in return caught up with him before trying to lynch him, the witnesses.

“I was sleeping till I heard a loud noise from outside only to see a man in my farm. I was first terrified before I called for help from my neighbours and I am glad that they responded in time,” said Mrs Onsongo.

“He is from the neighborhood and I am shocked that he could do that to me instead of asking for help. That was so bad of him since he has to spend some time in prison,” she added.

The accused was rescued from angry mob that were ready to lynch him by Nyamarambe police officers after being tipped by a law abiding citizen.

“I got a call from a man at 2am and we had to run here to rescue him. He was badly injured and we had to take him to a nearby hospital for quick treatment,” said Constable Willis Ogega.

The is set to appear before the Kisii law courts on Wednesday to answer charges of attempted theft.
