The Pharmacy and Poisons Board office of Crime, Investigation and Enforcement arrested a man in possession of Government of Kenya labelled medicines and hospital garments in Parklands area, Nairobi County.
The man is allegedly accused of ripping off government labels from the garments and selling them as plain clothes to unsuspecting citizens.
He is also accused of replacing original medicine with fake tablets and packing them in different medicine containers with fake labels for the purpose of selling.
During the operation on Tuesday, the Head of Crime Investigation and Enforcement Unit, Dennis Otieno disclosed that the accused is not allowed to handle such huge amounts of medicines.
He emphasized that "Anyone who is not registered as a pharmacist or doctor is not allowed to be in possession of medicines especially at his or her residential home."
The accused was also found with stamps, that he might be using to alter the expiry and manufacturing dates of the medicines and selling them to people.
“We have also found grounded white powder and we suspect that the accused manufactures his own medicine as well as grinding some Antiretroviral Drugs (ARVs) and selling them to herbalists,” he said.
The powdered stuff that is yet to be established through testing, is also suspected to be used to replace genuine medicine or even mix it.
The man was arrested and taken to police custody for questioning awaiting further investigations and charge.
"The value of the medicines will be quantified after thorough assessment," said Otieno.
He urged members of the public to be cautious and only buy medicines from registered pharmacists or registered institutions and report such cases to the Pharmacy and Poisons Board or the police for prompt action.
