Dennis Kutwa lost the money after the teams on which he had placed his bets failed to win.

Speaking after the incident, village elder John Mosop confirmed the incident and said that it was the villagers who rescued the man from death.

“He stabbed himself twice on his neck after the last whistle was made and he realised that he has lost. Luckly, the villagers came to rescue him and he was rushed to Taita Dispensary for immediate treatment,” he said.

According to his wife Alice Kutwa, her husband had earlier sold a cow with the intention of buying iron sheets to construct a house.

“He secretly went to bet without my knowledge. I had earlier warned him against betting but he refused to listen to my advice. The last moment he spoke to me saying 'I have lost' as he threw his phone on the wall,” she said.

Confirming the incident, area chief John Arusei warned young people against reckless gambling and urged them to engage in clearer ways of earning a living.
