A man in Nyatike on Saturday attempted to take away his life after being ordered to pay a Sh140 debt.
The man identified as Mika Otieno Okoth, reportedly took poison after his wife Nelly Okoth told him to pay the Sh140 to a maize seller in the neighborhood.
The wife had taken some maize from the neighbor and prepared it for lunch.
According to the area chief Nashon Odira, the man got agitated after his wife refused to sell a sub-hoofer they own to pay the debt.
Moments later, he was found lying unconscious on the floor of the house before he was rushed to Macalder Health Centre where nurses attended to him.
Odira decried the rising cases of suicide in the area saying some of the incidents involve minor issues which can be resolved through counseling.
"We are calling on religious leaders to intervene through prayers to prevent suicide incidents from continuing to happen here. The trend is worrying," Chief Odira told Radio Jambo.
The incident comes barely a few months after a resident committed suicide in the area.
