A man was on Tuesday morning burnt beyond recognition after his car collided head-on with a lorry at Ng’ombeni checkpoint.

Confirming the incident, Matuga OCPD Japhet Kibuga said the impact resulted in a huge explosion which burnt the Probox car.

Mr Kibuga said the Probox car was coming from Kwale and the lorry from Mombasa when the lorry rammed into the car along the Likoni-Lunga Lunga highway during the 7.30am accident.

Mr Kibuga said area residents rushed to the scene in an effort to try and save the car owner but could not manage due to the flames.

The OCPD said the Pro box was transporting charcoal which he claimed contributed to the huge fire after the explosion.

“All the seats were filled with charcoal and that is why the fire was too much to be put off by the locals who had run into the scene to save the victim,” he said.

According to Baraka FM, witnesses said the lorry was over speeding when it was overtaking and collided with the oncoming car from the opposite direction.

“The lorry rammed into the pro box and locked the exit door that is why we could not save the driver,” said Baraka Ali as quoted by Baraka FM.

The OCPD said the lorry driver escaped during the incident but they have taken the lorry to Diani police station hoping the owner will come and claim it adding that investigations into the incident have been launched.
