A man was over the weekend apprehended for being in possession of 74 rolls of bhang valued at Sh250,000.
Rashid Opondo, 37, was arrested while transporting the drugs to his market place and although he did not tell police where he conducts his business, he admitted to being the owner of the haul.
He has, however, puzzled the Kisumu police after admitting that he cannot live without bhang and it is the only business he can do as long he lives.
He went ahead and begged the police at Kondele police station to give him a minute to smoke at least to cool down his head as he might faint or go mad if he did not smoke the weed.
"I admit this bhang belongs to me and I was going to sell it, but I think I am better off than obtaining a living through stealing other peoples' property," he told police.
Police believe that Opondo is a notorious drug peddler who has been arrested several times only to be released on bond and go back to committing the same offence.
The man asked police to free him because his offence is much "lighter than others like defilement".
Commenting on the arrest, area assistant chief Harrison Mogokwama asked locals to cooperate with police in kicking the drug menace out of the lakeside region.
