A 27 year old man on Friday appeared in a Garissa court charged with fraudulently obtaining Sh161,000 from M-Pesa agents in the town.

The court heard that the suspect, Abdirizak Ibrahim, allegedly obtained the Sh32,000 from Rashid Hassan, Sh29,000 Asad Abdiwahab and Sh100,000 Omar Dolal.

Appearing before chief magistrate Cosmas Maundu, the accused denied the charges.

This is the second time in less than two months that Ibrahim has been arraigned for the same offence.

The accused is said to have committed the offence between September 11 and 13 from three M-Pesa agents.

He approached the agents requesting deposits of the money. He pretended to be counting the money and making a phone call.

Immediately he received a confirmation message for the deposit from the agent, the accused sneaked out of the shop while the operator is serving other customers and disappeared.

According to the prosecution, Ibrahim usually targets busy M-Pesa shops mostly run by semi-illiterate young men and women.

His request to be released on bail was denied on grounds that the accused life will be in danger.

He will be remanded at the Garissa GK Prisons until November 22 when the case will be heard.
