Joseph Maina pleaded guilty of the offence when he appeared before the Chief Magistrate, David Kemei.

The prosecution led by Hillary Sungoiyo told the court that Maina told his mother Anne Waithira that she won’t find him alive when she will be coming from the shamba.

He further asked his mother to call his sister from Murang’a immediately to ask the illegal Mungiki sect to come bury his body.

Waithira informed two of her neighbours who came hastily only to find Maina has locked the door and windows of his house.

The court heard that the three asked Maina to open but he refused prompting them to break a window to peep inside.

They found a rope around his neck and the other end on the frame of the roof. He apologized and assured them that he has abandoned the thought of committing suicide and they left.

Few minutes later, they heard the sound from the room and they ran towards the house only to find the accused hanging where they cut the rope.

The mother called the police where he was arrested and booked at Likia Police Station awaiting his prosecution.

Maina who seemed remorseful asked the magistrate to forgive him as he will not commit the act again. However, he didn’t disclose what made attempt the illegal act.

Maina will be remanded until August 15 when a pre-sentence report will be given.
