A man who allegedly impersonated a medical technicians’ inspector has been arraigned in a Kiambu court and charged with the offence.

Japheth Ochieng allegedly purported to be an inspector of the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board. He appeared before principal magistrate Diana Mochache where he faced an additional count of obtaining money by false pretence.

The court heard that Ochieng allegedly committed the offence on February 24 2012 at Shah Mansion House in Nairobi by falsely presenting himself as a public servant. He is accused of pretending to inspect a technical institute with a view to confirming its capacity to offer laboratory technicians and courses.

The court also heard that Ochieng tried to defraud Mbugua Karanja of Sh400,000 at Oriental Commercial bank in Nairobi. Karanja is a trustee of Kuldip Singh of the Technical Institute. The accused allegedly pretended that he was in a position to issue the said institute with a licence for the laboratory technicians and technologists’ courses.

The accused was hired by the institute in 2011 as an inspector but later dismissed by the institute’s board after receiving numerous complaints that he was harassing staff members besides collecting bribes for services he offered.

Ochieng has similar charges in Western Kenya’s Butere.

The accused denied the charges and said he is asthmatic, diabetic and also recovering from injuries sustained in an accident.

He was released on a cash bail of Sh200,000 or an alternative bond of Sh400,000 with a surety of a similar amount.

The case will be mentioned on November 3 and heard on November 19.
