A man in Nyamira has committed suicide hours before the burial of his wife.

The 42-year-old man is said to have hang himself on an avocado tree on Monday night as villagers prepared to bury his wife who died early last week.

The incident happened in Nyakami village in Manga location.

Area chief Cosmas Mocha told reporters that the man identified as Charles Mathethe may have taken away his life following the loss of his wife who he said he "loved dearly".

According to the administrator, the wife, Caren Kwamboka passed on on Monday last week following a short illness. She ahd been admitted to a local health center where she died from.

"I knew the two and I knew the love they had for each other. The wife's death may have stressed him so much that e decided to take away his life," Mr Mocha said.

Mathethe's body was found hanging on an avocado tree near his home on the day his wife was to be buried.

The incident in a double tragedy for man's family and chief Mocha called on good Samaritans to help take care of the couple's two children.

The family's neighbour said the man looked stressed after the wife's death.
