This happened at Mananasi village in Bomachoge Borabu, Kisii County.

Residents said the deceased identified as Lukas Basweti has been a chang’aa addict for over 10 years.

"Basweti has been consuming chang’aa for over the last 10 years. It seems he took his last glass of chang’aa while angry because his wife abandoned him early April this year,” said a local Walter Manani.

Area assistant chief Geoffrey Ombati confirmed the incident and said the deceased last year December was warned against chang’aa consumption when he was admitted to hospital.

“It is sad that Basweti died after he consumed chang’aa. I remember his wife reporting him to me early this year that the doctors had advised him to stop drinking chang’aa when he was admitted to hospital last year December,” he said.

Ombati said that investigations have been launched to establish whether the deceased was poisoned.

He said the chang’aa seller where the deceased was last seen has gone into hiding but police are tracing her to be arrested.

The local administrator said starting Friday this week a crackdown will be held in the village to ensure no one is brewing and selling chang’aa.

The deceased body was taken to Kisii Teaching and Referral hospital mortuary.
