Hundreds of youth in the Coastal region were on Monday disqualified for failing to meet the selection criteria during the first phase of the nationwide police recruitment exercise.
Most of the recruits in Mombasa County failed physical tests including the one on athletic fitness.
In Malindi, a large number of youth turned up for the police recruitment exercise but many were rejected because they lacked the required minimum grade of D+.
Two recruits collapsed after running around the field during the exercise and they were rushed to Malindi Sub-County Hospital for treatment.
A 23-year-old man collapsed and died in Kwale County during the police recruitment drive.
The police superintendent in charge of the recruitment exercise, Mr Moses Awiti, said the young man identified as Mwarika Rika, collapsed after completing a six kilometres race at Kwale Baraza park grounds.
Mr Awiti said Rika had presented himself for the recruitment exercise and was taken through several tests after which he was shortlisted to ran with other competitors in the race.
“He was part of other recruits who had been cleared and took part in a six-kilometre run. On arriving at the finishing line, he collapsed and he was rushed to Kwale Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” said Awiti.
In Lamu County, many youth missed the police recruitment drive after arriving late for the exercise. The youth were locked out of the Kibaki grounds where the exercise was taking place.
