Residents of Mbilini Village in Kangundo, Machakos County on Tuesday woke up in shock after a young man exhumed his mother’s grave to search for ‘gold’.

The young man had already exhumed his mother’s remains and arranged them on the sides of the grave together with the casket that was used to lay to rest his mother five years ago.

The neighbours of the young man popularly known by his first name as Mbithi, were saddened and shocked by his actions alerted the area Assistant Chief together with the community policing officers about the incident.

Speaking at the home where the incident happened, Mbilini Assistant Chief Onesmus Mwicha confirmed the incident. Mbithi after being asked why he did that that, he said that he was digging in search of gold, which according to him, was in the same plot of land.

“This is a strange act. The young man dug his mother’s grave who was buried 5 years ago and had arranged the remains on the sides of the grave. The man has never had mental problems before,” confirmed Mwicha.

According to Chief Mwicha the act is a taboo in the society which could attract a curse from the gods, “It is against the society beliefs to disturb the dead therefore, to appease the gods before the remains are buried again there will be sheep slaughtering.”

However, the man was taken to Kangundo District Hospital for mental check-up and questioning by a psychologist to find out if in case he had developed mental illness.

Kangundo Police OCPD Waqo Abdullah after arriving at the scene stated that if the medical report will state that the man is in good mental status, then he will face the law and be charged for such act.
