Edward Gekondo who witnessed the incident said that the staggering man slipped and fell into the swollen river.

"He started screaming immediately he fell into the waters and since none of those who were they could swim we did so little to help," said Gekondo.

Ogembo township chief Joshua Mokua said that the locals informed him about the incident and immediately he alerted the police.

"We have not succeeded in retrieving the body of the middle-aged man because of the ongoing heavy rains," he said.

The chief asked locals to ensure that they are careful when crossing rivers during this rainy season.

James Sorobi, a local asked the County Government to put up bridges in various parts of the river to avoid similar incidents.

"We request governor Ongwae to intervene and help in constructing bridges in various parts of this river to avoid such incidents," he said.

For years now, cases of people drowning in rivers especially during the rainy season are common.
