A man who had gone to bathe in River Yala lost his life when he slipped and drowned on Monday afternoon.
The incident which occurred at Migosi ‘A’ village in Gongo sub location, Gem Sub County left the village in grief as frantic efforts continued to search for his body.
According to the area assistant chief Vincent Onyango Owuor, 23-year-old Kevin Otieno Okello was in the company of other villagers when the incident occurred.
Chief Owuor said that the other villagers who were taking bath at the site made frantic efforts to rescue the victim in vain.
“Unable to help Okello, they raised an alarm which attracted other villagers,” said the administrator.
Owuor said police were informed and were joined by the public in search of the body.
The chief cautioned those fond of bathing along the river banks that it was illegal, adding that apart from such accidents that lead to loss of lives, it also pollutes the water that is relied on by people living downstream.
