A man aged 38 drowned in River Athi few metres from Jam City's foot bridge in Athi River District on Monday evening.
Evans Kioko, Athi River's KMC Estate resident and a matatu tout at DEVKI Bus Stop drowned in the river while on fishing expedition.
Eye witnesses who addressed the press at the scene said the deceased was using a hook to fish at the bridge when he slipped into the waters before drowning.
The body of the deceased who was married with three children was retrieved by a local volunteer diver from the region three hours after the incident.
Matatu touts operating in the region, colleagues of the deceased protested carrying the body moving along the busy Nairobi Mombasa Highway resulting to a snarl in traffic arguing that the local police had not assisted them in retrieving the body.
It took efforts of the Machakos Senator Johnston Muthama who coincidentally became victim of the traffic jam due to the protest to calm the youths.
Muthama addressed them promising that their grievances would be looked into by the government, and urged them to calm and move out of the road to allow normal flow of vehicles.
The youth relented and moved making transport return to normality before Athi River Police confronted them and took the body from them, it was then moved to Shalom Community Hospital Mortuary in Athi River.
