The youngster identified as Ndung'u Gatheru is said to have attempted to swim across the dam before he was overwhelmed by strong water currents.

Witnesses have indicated that the deceased could have also been tipsy when he drowned. His lifeless body was retrieved four hours later by Thika Fire Rescue Team and members of the public.

"He had just finished cleaning a car with a couple of his friends before he decided to go to the dam which is nearby for refreshment. He had, however, used a boat at first which is always anchored at the shore before he decided to swim across the dam," said Peter Njoroge, a witness.

Gatheru, who was a potter at his brother's hardware in the estate is said to have been a good swimmer.

"He was a good swimmer and diver. We really don't know what went wrong but he was tipsy," John Nderitu, a friend said.

A local leader Macharia Kamau, however, warned area youths against drinking when exploring waterways.

"This is a moment of water disasters and all of us can see what is happening around the country. We need to be very careful and avoid dangerous behaviours like drinking while manoeuvring in water," Kamau said.
