A middle aged man was on Monday morning found dead in Kimathi, Mitahato in Kiambu County after he allegedly took illicit brews.
According to eyewitnesses, the man who was not identified immediately has been gulping substandard brews daily while eating less or nothing.
"We are very much saddened by the death of this young man who was at his prime age. We request our Governor (Ferdinand) Waititu to come to this area and help stop this reckless drinking menace. In this area alcohol is sold from as early as 6.am," Cyrus Maina, a resident said.
Esther Wanjiku another resident said, "Let the governor come here and see for himself the damage alcoholism has inflicted on this area. Things are bad. In few years to come, there will be no young man left in this area if something is not done."
However, some bar sellers in the area have refuted claims that the man died because of alcohol saying the man was epileptic.
"Let us stop shouting and speaking nonsense that the man died because of alcohol. We should wait for postmortem results before going wild with baseless accusations. We sell legal brews at the right time as everybody sees. Those claiming that the man died because of alcohol have never even tasted it," Michael Njoroge, a bar owner said.
Njoroge noted that they are licensed by the county government and not individuals, therefore, inviting the liquor board inspectors to come and ascertain the kind of alcohol that they sell.
