A middle-aged man in Mombasa has been found guilty of planning a terror attack.

Abdiaziz Abdullahi Abdi was arrested on March 11, 2014 in Changamwe after he was found in possession of five AK 47 rifle magazines, 270 rounds of ammunition and six hand grenades. In his ruling on Friday, Mombasa Senior Principal Magistrate Francis Kyiambia said the prosecution had proven beyond doubt that the accused was guilty of illegal possession of weapons. It is clear that the prosecution has proved that the accused person was found in possession of six hand grenades, firearms and ammunitions without authority from an explosive licensing officer,” said Kyiambia. In his mitigation, the accused, through his lawyer Chacha Mwita, asked the court to consider the period he has been in custody before a sentence is made. “The accused person is young with so many years ahead of him and a family man blessed with seven children who have been relying on well-wishers,” said Mwita, as quoted by Baraka FM.However, the prosecution side, led by Peris Maina, opposed the request, arguing that the accused had committed a serious offence, which is punishable by the law.A sentencing hearing will be held on August 25, 2017.
