A Mombasa Court has sentenced a man who was found guilty of being in possession of a car laden with several explosives to 22 years in prison.

Abdiaziz Abdullahi was jailed for eight years for having firearms and ammunition without a certificate and another four years for planning to commit a felony.

Mombasa senior principal magistrate Francis Kyambia also sentenced the accused to serve another 10 years in jail for having a car used to carry and conceal bombs that were to be used to commit an act of terror.

The court heard that the accused was found in possession of six hand grenades, five AK 47 rifle magazine and 270 rounds of ammunition in Changamwe on March 11, 2014 .

Magistrate Kyambia, however, said the sentence will run concurrently adding that the court considered the period of three years and five months in which Abdullahi spent in police custody and also submissions by prosecution counsel Peris Maina that the accused was a first-time offender.

“The accused spent three years and five months in prison, therefore, I have deducted three years from each sentence," said the Magistrate as quoted by the star.

Abdullahi was charged alongside Isaak Noor who was acquitted as the prosecution failed to prove the charges levied against him.
