A middle aged man was hacked to death for failing to pay Sh100 debt.
The incident happened on Monday at Tanda village in Kenyenya Kisii County.
Residents said the deceased, James Karuri, was attacked with a panga by the suspect, Bernard Onyango after a heated argument arose between them
"He borrowed the money from Onyango but he was unable to refund it as agreed which led to the differences between the two," said Fred Moikoyo, a local.
According to him, Mr Onyango flashed a machete from his jacket and cut the deceased several times on the head.
Area Nyumba Kumi boss, Isaac Bitui said the suspect fled the scene of the accident.
"The suspect went into hiding after committing the crime and police have started looking for him. We shall ensure that he is arraigned in court," he said.
Mr Bitui asked locals not to take action into their own hands.
The body of the deceased was taken to the Kisii Teaching and Referral hospital mortuary.
