A middle aged man, who is believed to have committed an arson related offence in Ngata area, within Nakuru County, was on Wednesday charged in a court in Nakuru.
The prosecution desk told Chief Resident Magistrate Felix Kombo, who presided over the case that Samuel Kimani, aged 28, who lives in the School’s neighborhood was spotted at the school compound on the evening of February 28 last month, before the fire accident occurred.
The court was told that the accused had formed a habit of trespassing into the community based school compound while herding sheep and cattle, and was fond of smoking cigarettes.
According to the prosecution, fire erupted at the School about thirty minutes after the accused had left the compound, but he had kept off from helping other residents in putting off the inferno that destroyed reading material and property worth Sh500,000.
The magistrate was told that witnesses who recorded a statement at Ngata police station had identified the accused as the prime suspect in the fire accident.
He was arrested and locked up at the police post after recording a statement with the police on March 1.
The accused denied the charges and was remanded in custody after failing to raise a cash bond of Sh70,000, or a cash bail of Sh20,000.
The court also ordered the prosecution to present all the evidence and witnesses to the court during the April 6 hearing date of the case.
