A middle aged man was on Tuesday arraigned in a court in Nakuru to face charges of raiding his neigbour’s fish pond and harvesting ten Tilapia fish.

The court, under the precision of Chief Resident Magistrate Felix Kombo heard that Enock Obare, 27, illegally gained entry into the compound of one Julius Kariuiki on the night of March 8 this year in Kabatini village of Bahati sub-county within Nakuru County, and harvested ten Tilapia fish from the pond using traditional fishing bait.

The prosecution desk told the court that the accused was arrested by a security guard who works for the complainant’s neighour, and who the complainant had secretly instructed to be of help to prevent theft of fish from his pond.

The court heard that the accused was handed over to Bahati Police Station by the farm’s owner and other residents, after the security guard raised an alarm.

The accused, who works as a construction worker in Kabatini business centre was remanded in custody, after he failed to raise a cash bond of Sh30,000 and a bail of Sh10,000 after he denied the charges.

The prosecution had observed that cases of fish farmers running at a loss and eventually abandoning their farming were common, caused by illegal harvesters, the likes of the accused.

The case will be mentioned on March 31.
