A man was on Thursday charged before a Kisumu court for vandalising water pipes belonging to the Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company (Kiwasco).

Stephen Mugwei from Nyawitta estate in Kisumu denied the charges before Chief Magistrate Lucy Gitari. The offence is said to have been committed on September 20.

According to the prosecution, the accused was caught breaking the water pipes by Kiwasco officers on the said date who reported him to the police. He is alleged to have been planning to make an illegal water connection.

In his defence, the accused told the court that the pipe had been broken and he was trying to fix it. However, the prosecution dismissed his explanation on grounds that he was not mandated to make repairs.

Mugwei was released on a cash bail of Sh5, 0000 with surety of a similar amount.

The case will be heard on the January 13, 2016.

His arrest comes as a section of Nyawitta residents raised an alarm over vandalism of water pipes which they say has led to water shortage and contamination.
