One man has been transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital with burn injuries and panga cuts after he was reportedly caught harvesting sand in Muua river, Mukaa sub-county, Makueni county.

The angry residents also burnt the lorry they were using to harvest the sand.

Another lorry escaped with broken windows and windscreen. Makueni residents have stood their grounds on sand harvesting and occasionally taken the law into their own hands to protect their resources.

Previously some sand harvesters have fought back and allegedly poisoned the wells the residents use but this has not stopped residents from stopping sand harvesting. 

Several lorries have been burnt and scores injured in the process.
