A 22-year-old man has been jailed by a Mandera Court after he was found guilty of attempting to bribe an officer during a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruitment exercise.
Mr Issack Hassan Abdi was being charged with attempting to bribe Corporal Ben Chweya during the exercise at D.E.B primary in Elwak, Mandera South Sub-County.
The court heard that the accused person committed the offence on May 30, 2017 where he attempted to give Sh100,000 to Corporal Chweya as bribe.
The court was told that the accused tried to bribe the recruitment officers after he was told he had failed medical test due to dental complications.
The prosecution however said that the KDF officer turned down the offer and called for the accused’s arrest.
The court heard that Corporal Chweya advised Mr Abdi to start a business with the money instead of trying to compromise the recruitment process.
Mandera Resident Magistrate Duncan Mtai in his ruling found the accused guilty of the charges and ruled that he be jailed for one year.
Magistrate Mtai in his ruling said that the bribe was to act as an inducement, to facilitate unethical recruitment and the jail term will serve as an example to other similar incidences in future.
