A 43-year-old man has appeared before a Kisumu law court to answer to charges of cattle theft from a Muhoroni farm.
Victor Kitonyi was arrested last week for allegedly stealing the five cows from the farm belonging Susan Amondi.
Kitonyi denied the charges before Kisumu's chief magistrate, Lillian Oteba.
According to the prosecution, the cattle were stolen on the June 22 in Muhoroni and the owner filed a police report about the incident, leading to investigations.
The court heard police received a tip-off about a lorry transporting cattle along the Muhoroni-Kisumu road, where the lorry was tracked and stopped.
Four cows were recovered and positively identified by the owner as she had marked them. The remaining cattle were rescued on Friday last week while heading to a slaughterhouse in Kisumu.
Police interrogated the owner, who proved that he had been sold the cow by Kitonyi.
Further investigations and search recovered three cows at the accused’s residence and police believe that they had been stolen from elsewhere.
Kitonyi was granted cash bail of Sh50,000 with surety of a similar amount. The case will be heard on July 24.
