Residents of Makongeni in Thika Sub-county were on Tuesday morning awakened by gunshots and screams for help when unknown people were allegedly found attacking a resident.
The attack happened outside an Equity bank ATM in the area.
Richard Maina 37, a cashier at Leestar supermarket in Makongeni, was attacked after he withdrew cash from the ATM as he wanted to travel to Nairobi.
According to Maina, the attackers were at the ATM when he arrived and he thought they were clients as any other only for him to get out and find them waiting for him outside the booth. He allegedly lost Sh7,000 and some documents in the melee.
Some of the residents have allegedly raised alarms severally about insecurity in the area but the police have been casual about it.
"We have been reporting these matters to the police station but no action is taken. We are being attacked day after day," Jane Wangui, a resident expressed.
Following the incident, Thika Sub-county police boss Shadrack Maithya issued a warning to the criminals and attackers in the area. He cited that some bodaboda operators in the area are suspected of being criminals in the area at night.
"The bodaboda operators have been linked with these attacks and we will get them. Anyone involved in these activities will not be spared once apprehended," Maithya warned.
The victim is nursing injuries after the attack as police launch investigations to get the culprits.
