A middle aged man was arraigned in a Thika court on Wednesday and accused of endangering his life by declining to take medication. Bonface Mbuthia, 27, from Pundamilia village in Makuyu had appeared before Resident Magistrate Esther Mburu on February 11, 2015 and pleaded innocent on the crime levelled against him. The court heard that Mbuthia, who has been suffering from Tuberculosis, declined to take medicine that was prescribed by his Makuyu dispensary doctor. He has however under the supervision of the court been taking the drugs for the one month he has been in custody. According to his current doctor, Maureen Gikunda, who is a registered clinical officer and also a warden at GK prison in Thika, the accused has been taking the drugs and has been quarantined from other inmates to avoid spreading the disease. The magistrate while giving her ruling ordered the accused to always adhere to prescriptions as directed by the doctor. He was handed 8 months custodial sentence to complete his medication. The case will resume on October 12, 2015.
