A Kisumu man who was arraigned in a Kisumu court to answer to charges of beating up and tying a security guard manning a fertiliser shop was on Thursday jailed for a year and a half.
Earlier on Bevan Denga had pleaded not guilty to the charges of theft and assault before Kisumu Chief Magistrate Esther Maina.
According to the prosecution desk, the accused and his accomplice who was identified as Okwiri Samuel hatched a plan to steal fertiliser from an Agro vet shop located in Kibos Kisumu. The accomplice is still at large.
The two are said to have committed the offence on the night of December 24, 2014. The court heard that they went to the shop where they destroyed a security fence before gaining entry.
The court heard that the two beat up the security guard seriously injuring him before tying him up. He was discovered the following morning, where the matter was reported to police after receiving treatment.
The accused was arrested three days later trying to sell the fertiliser at the Kibuye Market in Kisumu.
He was given 14 days to appeal the decision.
