A 28-year-old man was yesterday sentenced to one year in jail by a Nakuru court for stealing property belonging to Kenya Railways.
Samuel Maina was found guilty of stealing metal bars, property of Kenya Railways on May 18 this year, at Mau Summit area in Molo sub-county.
Nakuru senior principal magistrate Liz Gicheha, who delivered the judgement, said that the witnesses who testified in court proved that the accused committed the offence.
“The court finds you guilty after carefully analysing the evidence presented by the prosecution. You are hereby jailed for one year,” said the magistrate while making the judgement.
The court heard that Maina was arrested by police officers from Railways police station after a tip-off by the public.
In his mitigation, Maina, a father of three, pleaded with the court to consider giving him a lenient sentence, saying that he is the sole breadwinner of his family as his mother is deceased.
However, the magistrate said the jail term was lenient and was meant to serve as a lesson to would-be offenders.
