A Kisumu court on Tuesday jailed a man for one year after he was found guilty of attempting to bribe an officer during February's KDF recruitment exercise.
Kennedy Otieno appeared before Resident Magistrate Duncan Mtai and was charged for with attempting to bribe Corporal Ben Chweya, during the exercise at Akonya primary in Kisumu.
According to the charge sheet provided by the prosecutor, Otieno tried to compromise the corporal on 12th February, 2018 but the officer turned down the offer and called for his arrest.
During the session, the court heard that the accused attempted to bribe recruitment officers after he was told that he had failed the medical test due to dental complications.
In his ruling, the magistrate noted that Otieno's action was an inducement to facilitate unethical recruitment adding that the jail term will serve as an example to other similar offenders in future.
"Bribery is an offense under the Kenyan law and the accused has been found guilty of the same but he is allowed to appeal," the magistrate noted.
