A man was on Wednesday given an option of going to jail for six months or pay a Sh30,000 fine for possessing bhang.

The man had been charged at a Machakos court for possessing 500 grams of bhang.

Machakos Senior Principal Magistrate Ngare Gesora sentenced the accused, Swaleh Mohammed after he pleaded guilty of the offense.

Prosecution had told court that on August 8, 2015 police officers from Kithimani Police Station while on patrol were tipped about the man who was in possession of bhang.

The officers invaded his premises and on searching, they discovered one stone of bhang, 11 rolls and 50 grams of bhang seeds which was intended for sale.

The accused was arrested and taken to Kithimani Police Station and there after charged for illegally possessing bhang.

The prosecution however told the court that the accused was a first offender.

The Magistrate ruled the accused to pay a fine of Sh30,000 or be imprisoned for a period of six months.

He also ordered the exhibit to be destroyed.
