A 74-year-old man has allegedly set his house ablaze, killing himself, his wife and their four children at the Toll Station in Trans Nzoia.

The incident happened on Tuesday.

Retired prison warder Absalom Kithaka is said to have set the house on fire after a clash with his wife Christine Nekesa.

He doused the house with petrol after the family slept.

“At first, when we heard the screams, we thought nothing of it because the couple quarrelled frequently. Little did we know that the husband had set the house on fire and the family was burning inside,” said Jasper Nandasaba, a neighbour quoted by Standard.

The children who perished were identified as Lilian Oyombo, four, Damaris Oyombo, nine, Dorcas Oyombo, 12 and  Yusuf Oyombo, 15.

Only the eldest child Leah Oyombo, 17, survived and was rushed to the Mt Elgon District Hospital with severe injuries.
