A middle aged man was on Friday beaten to death after he attempted to steal a cow at Nyachenge village in Kisii South Sub County.
Confirming the incident, Kisii South OCPD David Mburukua said the deceased was in company of two other suspects who escaped the wrath of the public.
Mburukua said the three attempted to steal a cow belonging to Dismas Mogere at his home at 5.00am on the fateful day.
He said the irate residents caught and lynched the unidentified man while his two accomplices escaped.
“Three unknown men entered into one of the villager’s home and tried to steal a cow but the owner alerted other neighbors immediately when he noticed something unusual outside his house and they managed to kill one, ” Mburukwa said.
The police boss addressed the press at his office in Kisii on Saturday.
Mburukua said police rushed to the scene and rescued the deceased from the mob, they took him to Kisii Level Six Hospital where he later later died while undergoing treatment.
Mburukua, however, faulted residents for taking the law into their hands warning that mob justice is punishable by law.
He said police were pursuing the two other suspects who escaped and asked anyone with information to volunteer it to help police arrest them.
The body was moved to the hospital’s mortuary awaiting identification.
