A 35-year-old man accused of stealing a Sh20 egg in Munyaka estate on the outskirts of Eldoret town on Wednesday narrowly escaped death after police saved him from an angry mob.
The man whose identity has not been revealed is said to have visited the Munyaka market to buy vegetables and stole an egg from one of the stalls he wanted to buy the commodity but the owner was not around.
Lilian Jeptoo an eyewitness who is also a business lady at the market said the stall owner had asked her to step in for her shortly and when the suspect arrived at the other stall she was serving another customer at her shop.
"The man stopped briefly at the other stall and by the time I arrived at the stall from my shop, I saw him walking away first. I suspected he had done something fishy and on counting the number of eggs in a tray they were less by one. This is when I shouted to get help from members of the public to help arrest him," said Jeptoo.
The public quickly arrested the suspect and searched him but to their surprise, they only found an empty shell of an egg.
"We were astonished and wondered what he might have done with egg because the content in the egg was missing," said Jacob Oduor, an eyewitness.
A mob that had gathered around the suspect started beating him up as they demanded for an explanation to what he had done to the egg but police arrived just on time to rescue him.
