The Mombasa High Court has sentenced the man found guilty of killing Muslim cleric Sheikh Mohammed Idris to death.
The accused, Mr Mohamed Sudi, faced charges of killing the cleric at Manyatta in Likoni.
The court heard that the cleric, who was also the chairman of the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK), was shot by gunmen on a motorcycle as he headed to prayers at a mosque on June 10, 2014.
The cleric died while receiving treatment at Pandya Memorial Hospital.
The accused was arrested by the flying squad who found the pistol used in the attack in his possession.
Justice Martin Muya dismissed claims by Mr Sudi that he was framed by the police who planted the evidence.
In his ruling, Justice Muya found the accused guilty of the charges saying the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
The defense council Mr Chacha Mwita in mitigation asked the court to give the accused a non-custodial life sentence since he was a family man with two wives and seven children.
Judge Muya however said the death sentence was the only sentence given to individuals found guilty of murder and other alternatives were still under considerations in the Supreme Court.
