A middle aged lady is counting losses after a man visited her Mpesa shop, in Lolwe estate, grabbed Mpesa mobile phone and disappeared, before transferring Sh72,000 from the line.
The man who posed as a customer first deposited Sh150 before getting back to deposit another Sh200. He then returned and asked if his new line would be registered.
According to the lady the man was sitted waiting for the registration process to complete when another customer came to purchase a bulb.
When the lady, identified as Ndagwadha went to pick the bulb for the customer, the man picked the phone from the counter and ran away.
The lady immediately called Safaricom customer care. She was told no transaction had taken place and that they would block the line which. She later found out that Sh72,000 had been transferred.
The transactions were made in two phases the first amount was Sh40,000, then Sh32,000. They were made to different lines within 3 minutes, when she was calling customer care, according to Safaricom records.
It is not known how the man was able to get past the M-pesa pin but is alleged he may have been mastering the M-pesa pin when he asked for the two M-pesa deposits and registering of the line.
"I did not suspect anything fishy for it is normal customers to come back. I am worried. I don't know if I will ever get the money again since my colleague have in the past lost money and not able to trace,'' she said while in tears, Thursday.
