A middle-aged man was on Wednesday morning beaten to death by an irate mob at Gatukuyu, Kiambu County over robbery claims.

The man is alleged to have been committing a series of robberies targeting motorbike riders in Gatukuyu and Kairi areas. 

The suspect had initially been taken to Kairi Administration Police Post by the riders, but residents could not hear explanations from the police officers manning the post that the suspect will be taken to custody and charged accordingly.

The police officers were overwhelmed by the crowd who pelted stones at the suspect leading to his instant death.

Gatukuyu police commandant Joel Kimemia who arrived at the scene after the death of the suspect condemned the incident and called on residents to be calm and allow the law to takes its course.

He urged residents to continue coexisting peacefully and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

He warned that mob justice was not a solution to social vices.

Kimemia called on the county commissioner to reinforce Kairi AP post with two more officers. 

The body of the slain suspect was taken to Thika Level Five Hospital by police, who have launched investigations into the incident.
