A man who is said to have accidentally killed his son while fighting his wife has committed suicide in a police cell after being arrested.

Eutycus Githinji, according to Radi Jambo committed suicide using his shoelaces at Huruma Police Station in Nairobi on the night of May 23 and his body was found hanging on one of the windows of the police cell's toilet.

The man, 45, was arrested on Monday after allegedly stabbing his son with a kitchen knife before he went into hiding. Dennis Mwema, the son, was stabbed at their Huruma home as he attempted to prevent Githinji from beating up his mother Eunice Wanza.

Mwema was confirmed dead upon arriving in hospital. Wanza, 37, sustained serious injuries during the fight. She reported the incident to police officers at Huruma Police Station after the fight. She has been married to Githinji for eight years.

The fight ensued after Githinji returned home at 3am drunk provoking Wanza who engaged him in a verbal altercation which turned into a fistfight. Mwema was asleep at the time but was awaken by the noise. He rushed to rescue his mother but Githinji dragged him into the kitchen from where he stabbed him.

Neighbours said they heard screams for help.

On Wednesday, Nairobi Directorate of Criminal Investigations head Ireri Kamwende said police are investigating the incident.
