A middle aged man was arraigned in a Thika court to answer to charges of defiling his neighbour’s daughter. The accused, Moses Kuria, 32, appeared before the Thika Acting Chief Magistrate Stephen Mbingi. He was charged that on October 13, 2014, he defiled his neighbour’s 9 year-old daughter in Makuyu village, Murang’a County. The prosecution led by Chief Inspector, Nancy Muthuri, told the court that on the material day the accused person found the girl playing outside their house with her friends and he offered them sweets. “He gave the two boys sweets but lured the girl into his house to pick some sweets as he did not have enough in his pocket,” said Muthuri. Innocently the girl followed the man into his house where he defiled her before releasing her to go home and warned her not to reveal the matter to anyone. The court heard that the mother got suspicious after she stayed out long, as it was getting late and her friends told her that she had gone into the accused person’s house to get some sweets. She went to her neighbour’s house but met with her daughter on the way crying clasping tightly to her clothes. She demanded to know what had happened to her and the girl told her that the accused person had done raped her. Narrating the ordeal to the court the mother broke down and wailed uncontrollably, telling the court that she has had a very rough time handling the daughter who has never recovered from the trauma. Kuria who maintains that he was innocent will remain in police custody, as he is unable to raise 250,000 shillings bond. The case will continue on June 27 when the doctor who attended to her at the Thika level 5 Hospital is scheduled to testify.
