Matatu owners across the country have been asked not to set high daily targets for their drivers during this festive season.
Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago says this will help ensure public service vehicles don't over speed hence minimizing road accidents.
Speaking during Jamhuri day celebrations at 64 stadium in Eldoret town, Mandago expressed concerns over the high number of accidents that have been reported recently.
"It's so unfortunate that we've lost very many people within a short time through road accidents along Eldoret-Nakuru highway and other areas some of which could have been avoided," Mandago said.
"Matatu owners should avoid setting high targets for their drivers because once they say a certain amount of money must be returned at the end of the day, drivers have no otherwise but to go at a speed that will make them achieve the target which is dangerous," he added.
The governor, however, asked drivers to exercise caution while at the same time challenging traffic police officers and National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to ensure strict adherence to traffic rules and regulations.
"If there is anytime our traffic police need to up their game is this festive season because many people are using our roads and we need to ensure they are safe," Mandago noted.
