The National Assembly Committee of Agriculture and Livestock has been urged to be conducting public participation at the grassroots before coming up with the Agriculture budget.
Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago said this will give the MPs the actual amount needed to sufficiently finance the Agriculture docket.
“I want to call upon the National Assembly Committee for Agriculture to be getting views from farmers from the village before coming up with an allocation for the Agriculture sector,” said governor Mandago after the National Assembly Committee of Agriculture and Livestock paid him a courtesy call, Friday.
The County boss reiterated that they cannot allow some few individuals seated in Nairobi to decide to them the amount of money the sector should be allocated yet they don’t know what farmers are passing through.
“As a governor and also a farmer from the region, we are tired of being allocated 3.5 percent of the National budget instead of 10 percent and yet agriculture in the backbone of our economy, how will our country be food secure with such allocation?” added the Jubilee governor.
He further called upon the committee to ensure that farmers from the region get fertilizers on time.
"It's sad that as I am talking more than 70 percent of farmers from the region have not planted their crops due to lack of fertilizers. I urge the Agriculture committee to fast-track the process by ensuring farmers get enough fertilizers for them to plant their crops," said governor Mandago.
