Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago has pledged his support for the cooperative movements in the county.
Speaking during the Ushirika Day celebrations at the Noble Hotel on Saturday, Mandago said his government is poised to empower cooperatives financially to boost the county's economy.
"Recently we have unveiled a 60-million enterprise prize to support and revive collapsed cooperatives," he said.
Mandago added that funds would see cooperatives receive loans given at a low interests.
"We charge an interest rate of 8% to businessmen, 5%to farmers and zero percent to youths," he said.
He however challenged cooperatives to ensure that money loaned is put in good use, adding that the county's cooperatives officer would carry out regular monitoring to enhance accountability and transparency to prevent embezzlement of funds.
He called upon Kenyans to cultivate the culture of saving for cooperatives and urged Uasin Gishu county residents to join cooperative societies since that was a prime requirement to the qualification for the loans.
