He said farmers should learn skills and technology from their colleagues by benchmarking on the farms of prosperous farmers to boost productivity and earnings from agriculture.

“Farmers should embrace modern farming so as to easily diversify to other types of farming such as fishery, poultry, horticulture and others as opposed maize farming,” said Mandago.

Mr Cyril Cheruiyot, the Minister for Agriculture in Uasin Gishu County said that maize farming is now faced with challenges like diseases and low market prices.

Cheruiyot said the county has started a programme that will help farmers generate income daily.

“We have started a programme on banana tissue culture. We are yet to distribute them to farmers,” said Cheruiyot.

He said farmers from Olare/Ainabkoi ward will benefit from the current pyrethrum programme.

“Among those who will benefit are Kaptagat, Kapsoya, Kesses, Moiben and Kapsaret where pyrethrum does well,” said Cheruiyot.

The pyrethrum project, which will start in 10 days, will benefit farmers in the region.
