State agencies mandated to oversee forest and environmental conservation have been accused of laxity in delivering their mandate.
Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago has specifically hit out at the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) for being a hindrance to forest conservation.
Speaking in Eldoret town on Thursday, Mandago accused KFS of allowing millers to cut down trees without monitoring them.
The vocal governor suggested that locals were even better at the forest conservation than KFS.
"KFS are supposed to be championing for forest conservation but they are turning out to be a hindrance to the very same course," Mandago noted.
"They go out allowing logging but never follow up to supervise on how the trees are cut down and this has been a major contributor to forest destruction in this county," he added.
The governor reiterated the need for state agencies involved in conservation to effectively deliver their mandate for the benefit of the future generations.
