Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet counties have threatened to launch a petition at the National Assembly.

Governor Jackson Mandago says the relevant government agencies are delaying in declaring Kaptagat Forest a water tower.

"If the relevant government agencies do not hasten our plea, we are ready to launch a petition," said Mandago on Monday in Eldoret town.

The vocal Jubilee governor and his Elgeyo Marakwet counterpart Alex Tolgos have been pushing for Kaptagat Forest to be gazetted as a water tower.

The two counties have raised this concern following logging activities going on in the forest.

Kaptagat Forest sits on the boundary of the two counties to the East and acts as a crucial water catchment area.

The forest feeds several wetlands in both counties. Gazettement will outlaw logging in the forest.

The concern is that, should uncontrolled logging go on in the forest, rivers, and wetlands downstream will dry up.

Mandago laments that the problem of lack of water being experienced in one of South Africa's cities can be experienced in North Rift, someday, if this issue is not addressed as soon as possible.
