Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago has called on the weatherman to invest in latest technologies that could offer the more reliable forecast.
He said the Meteorology Department needs to adopt more sophisticated equipment to save the country effects of inaccurate predictions.
“Farmers in Uasin Gishu were badly affected by the poor weather forecast that led to farmers planting their crops at wrong time leading the retarded growth of maize due to lack of rain,” he said after he met World Bank's Program on Climate officials in his office, Monday.
“We really depend on rains for us to practice agriculture, therefore, we need accurate weather forecasting,” he added.
The team from the national lender is in Eldoret for a two-day meeting with officials from 11 counties. The meeting is themed Kenya Climate-Smart Agriculture Project led by Ladisy Chengula.
“Among issues, we are fronting include harnessing research to increase productivity through introduction and adoption of climate-resistant crop varieties and animal breeds and also fighting to ensure that industrial emissions are reduced through an increase of forest cover,” said Ladisy Chengula.
