Uasin Gishu County government has waived all daily charges for hawkers using the newly constructed Hawkers' Wholesale market in Eldoret.
According to Governor Jackson Mandago, this move is meant to woo hawkers to occupy the space.
"We decided to waive the charges because hawkers had refused to use the market despite its completion opting to use the streets," he said.
Speaking to journalists at the Uasin Gishu County headquarters on Wednesday, Mandago said despite the market costing Sh30 million, no hawker has occupied it leading to its closure.
"I am calling upon them to refrain from selling their products in the streets, but instead use the market since it's free of charge," he said.
He said this will ensure they sell their goods in a conducive environment free from contamination.
